About Me (And You)

You’re a writer. Maybe you’ve been writing stories since you were little. Maybe you’re just starting out. Whatever your background, you know for a fact that words give you life. You love the process of building memorable worlds and characters. You get a little thrill every time you come up with a new idea for a story or poem. You’re inspired by the environment and people around you. And maybe, just maybe, you’re ready to share your words with the world.

But there might be a few things holding you back. You could be dealing with:

  • A lack of confidence in your writing

  • A sense of intimidation/overwhelm of the literary and publishing community

  • A feeling of discouragement (either from other people, yourself, or both)

  • Fear that you’re not good enough to get published

I’ve been there before and it’s not fun.

But guess what?

You deserve:

  • To realize your dreams of publication.

  • A mentor who is not only knowledgeable about writing and the publishing industry but who also wants to see you achieve all your writing goals

  • An approachable and honest writing buddy who can help you grow and improve

The best part about all this?

You don’t need any fancy degrees to be a published writer. A lot of people mistakenly believe that they need an MFA to get published in literary magazines, or to publish their novel. That is so far from the truth! What you need is the right knowledge, skills, and support. When you have those three things, anything is possible.

My name is Manuela Williams and writing is my jam. But how exactly did I get here?

I’ve loved writing since I was a little girl. I read so many fantasy novels in my free time and, one day, I decided that I wanted to write my own. My first ever fantasy “novel,” was called The Stone. I named the main characters Oak and Ivy (cringe) and I really thought it was going to be a best-selling epic (oh, bless my little middle school heart)!

As I got older, my love for reading and writing only grew. In college, I started off as a Biology major but switched to studying English and never looked back.

Not everyone was supportive of my writing, though. A former teacher once tore a short story of mine to shreds.

They didn’t like my “whiny” main character and didn’t think my story had a “point” (yep, they used those exact words). Another instructor said I wasn’t ready to learn about how to submit my work for publication. I was humiliated and discouraged. I thought about giving up writing for good.

Luckily, around that same time, I found an AMAZING mentor. She cheered me on, even when I was starting to lose faith. And guess what?

Shortly after working with her, my very first short story was published in a literary magazine! Now, I have my very own column at DIY MFA and several publications under my belt (all without an MFA!).

I don’t believe in “gatekeeping” in the publishing industry. You don’t have to have a fancy degree to write. You don’t have to know any famous people to get noticed or published. All it takes is one kick-ass story and the confidence to keep submitting it, despite rejection.

Now I want to help YOU smash through your self-doubt, improve your writing, and get published. Because I know that if I can do it, you can too.
